Passenger/cargo steamship built for Archibald Currie & Co's Australian and Indian Line, Melbourne in 1910. Employed on the Melbourne - Calcutta run she carried Australian Brumbies north and Indian produce and exotic animals on the southern run.

Captain Colin McDonald of the British-India SN Company's steamer Janus, retired from the sea priror to the steamer's departure from Newcastle a few days ago on her return to India. Captain McDonald was previously with
Messrs. Archibald Currie for many years and had command of most of the steamers of that line. He brought the Janus out from the Tyne as a new vessel about eleven, years ago. When the Currie Line was bought by the British-India S.N. Company, Captain McDonald went over with the Janus. He still holds a posltion with the British-India SN Company. |

13.10.1926 - On route from Calcutta to Adelaide, in heavy seas, fire was discovered in the kapok cargo of #3 hold when the vessel was 60 miles west of Neptune Islands. Six hose lines were deployed. and blazing material was thrown into the sea through the bulkhead cargo doors. After a seven hour battle the blaze was extinguished but not before considerable damage had been done to the ship. |
